0408 Archangel Michael
|
|
Russian from the Yaroslav region
mid-17th cent
33.5x27.5x2.5cms
The words that are written across the top and sides of the icon are believed to be an abreviated text of Revelation XII.vii-xii.
In the icon Michael has the features described in St John's apolyptic vision. His right arm is lifted to Heaven; in it a closed book. His other hand holds a golden censor. A rainbow surrounds his head; his face reflects the sun; his stirrup is a cloud. He blows his trumpet as signal for earth's destruction.
Archangel Michael spears a red grotesque two-headed winged devil with three human feet and a paw . All around is chaos.
But in the top right corner is proclaimed the ultimate victory of Good. The Saviour is represented in a chalice, in a medallion which is itslf supported by the Hand of God.
