0312 St John the Baptist

Painted in the style of Pimen Fyodorovich Ushakov [1626 - 86], St John is shown in the image of a wandering prophet urging repentance because of the imminent appearance of The Messiah. He carries a scroll which is inscribed with the words of Matthew 3:2 "Repent , for the kingdom of heaven is at hand".
Purchased from a private collector in the U.K., the icon has been cleaned and there has been minor restoration to the Saint's beard; the radiance of God in the top left hand corner; and the drapery.
