Early 18th cent.

The icon has a double Kovcheg

This shoulder length image of Christ, known in Russian as "Spas Jaroe Oko" [The Fiery Eye],  portrays a masculine image of Christ reflecting the importance of His mission on Earth. His expressive face has a deeply furrowed brow, highly arched eyebrows, deep set eyes, down turned mouth and unkempt hair ...... all testify to the determination to fulfill His Father's Will.

Images like this first began appearing in Russia in the 14th cent. with the invitation of Greek iconographers by the Russian Orthodox Church. This representation shows little had changed 400 years after that migration.

However, although the icon was written around 1800 the board on which the image appears is 17th cent. It is believed that an Old Believer iconographer wishing to retain the love that had beeen given to and bestowed by the icon, used an old board when the original one was re-written around 1800.
